Dot
Records (1953 – 1967)
10-inch
LPs and 7-inch EPs
The 10" LP
format was popular in the early and mid-1950s, but became
less popular as the 12" LP took over. Like most record
companies of the time, Dot issued 10" LPs until about
1955, when the bottom dropped out of 10" LP sales. The
7" extended play 45 rpm record was popular in the late
1950s, but by the early 1960s was dead. The stereo single
lifetime lasted even shorter time. It began in early 1959
and was over by mid-1960.
The label on the 10 inch record series was maroon with silver
printing. "Dot" in silver script above the center
hole, "LONG 33 1/3 PLAY" and "DOT RECORDS,
INC. * GALLATIN, TENNESSEE" at the bottom of the label.

The first label on the 12 inch record series was the
same as the label used on the 10 inch series, maroon with
silver printing. "Dot" in silver script above the
center hole, "LONG 33 1/3 PLAY" and "DOT RECORDS,
INC. * GALLATIN, TENNESSEE" at the bottom of the label.
After August 1956, the address was changed to "HOLLYWOOD
28, CALIF."
The original logo on the front of the albums was a circle
with "Dot" in script and the record number both
in the circle. This label and logo was used from 1955 to mid-1957,
approximately DLP-3030. This changeover took place about the
time that Randy Wood sold Dot to Paramount Pictures, in 1957.
In 1957, the label
changed to the more familiar black label with silver print.
A script "Dot" in yellow, red and blue is above
the center hole. Around the bottom of the label is "DOT
RECORDS, INC., HOLLYWOOD 28, CALIF. TRADEMARK REGISTERED IN
U.S. PAT. OFF." This label was used unchanged from about
3031 in 1957 to at least DLP 25856 in 1968. Reissues of the
early albums 3000- 3030 used the black label, also.
The stereo series used the same numbering sequence as the
mono series, except the prefix was 25xxx instead of 3xxx.
The first stereo albums were issued in 1958 at approximately
3123, although Dot subsequently reissued many earlier albums
in rechanneled stereo, or re-recorded some for stereo in 1959.

By
1960, most of the album issues were done in both stereo and
mono. The logo Dot used was usually the plain circle, but
occasionally they used the more elaborate Dot/Paramount logo.
There does not seem to be any consistency for this, as some
albums have one logo on the front and the other on the back.
All used the normal black Dot label, regardless of which logo
was on the cover.

The labels used during 1963-1968 were the same as had
been used since 1957. There is some notation in collectors'
books that a transition label was used with only the information
on the bottom of the label changed, to "A Division of
Paramount Pictures" on the bottom, but we have not seen
this label. Indeed, we have seen albums with the Paramount
logo on the jacket and the old Dot label inside.
